Gandhi Ashram

It is not a tall claim to make that what was Sabharmati to Gujarat was Tiruchengodu Gandhi Ashram to Tamilnadu. Gandhiji christened his experiment at Sabharmati as Satyagraha Ashram. Rajaji christened his in Salem District (now Namakkal District) at Gandhi Ashram. Both the Ashrams played a key role in the political destinies of the country as a whole and in the lives of their inmates as individuals, 26 of them took part in freedom struggle also. Gandhiji pitched his Ashram near the biggest industrial centre in Gujarat, via Ahmedabad. Rajaji started his Ashram in a far off village in Salem district ( now Namakkal district) which remains still a village even after several decades. Aims and Objects of the Ashram: The Tiruchengodu Gandhi Ashram was started at Pudupalayam, hamlet of Nallipalayam village, Tiruchengodu Taluk, by Shri. Rajaji as the South Indian of the Gandhi Seva Sangh,Bharadha pledged to serve the country on the lines indicated by Gandhiji. This was formally inaugurated on 6th Feb, 1925 in the presence of many distinguished men notable among whom included E.V.Ramaswamy Naicker, M.G.Vasudevayya, K.Santhanam, N.V.Krishna Chettiar, K.V.Subba Rao and Narayana Rao. The late Rathna Sabhapathy Gounder, Mittadhar of Pudupalayam a devotee of Rajaji must have been very proud of his association with Rajaji in those early days when the Country had not even a clear vision of its own social, political and economical future.      Book Now

Arulmigu Arthanareeswarar Temple

Tiruchengode (also known as "Thirukodi mada chengundroor " in Vedic times) has many references in puranas, like Thevaram and Silapathikaram. In Silapathikaram, Ilangoadigal referred Tiruchengode as "Chengodu " and that "it has numerous holy ponds and enjoys popularity and prosperity". This temple has been praised by the Nayanmar Thirugnanasambandhar in his devotional hymen Devaram. Great poets and saints like Arunagirinathar, Ilangoadigal, and Kaviraja pandithar amongst others have enlogised this holy place in their divine poems. The idols of Birungi Munivar and Arunagirinathar are found inside the temple. This ancient hill temple according to the inscriptions on the walls must have been built about 2000 years ago. Many renovation works and additions were done by the kings and chieftains ruled over Tamilnadu in the past. The town has a hill, which is about 650 ft. height . The hill is referred in many names like Chemmalai, Nagamalai, Nandhimalai and many more. Lord Arthanareeswarar is giving salvation to all souls, from the hill top temple. Lord Sengottuvelavar and Lord Adhikesava Perumal in separate shrines as presiding deities. Lord Arthanareeswarar has a unique form here, which combines half male and half female form. The lord is also known as Madhorubagan and Ammayappan. It is claimed that this rare posture of the Lord as prime deity can be found only in this temple in the whole of Asia.
